Quick Answer

Pitta acid reflux goes beyond occasional heartburn — burning throat, sour taste on waking, chest tightness after meals, and night-time flares. Pitta's sharp Agni produces excess acid when aggravated. Four levers: aloe vera juice before meals, cooling lunch as the biggest meal, no eating after 7pm, and DGL licorice between meals. Most cases improve within two weeks.

The Pitta reflux pattern

It starts as warmth behind the breastbone. Then it climbs — throat burning, a sour or metallic taste in the mouth, a tightness in the chest that makes you wonder if it is something worse. You wake at 2am with acid in your throat. Antacids help for an hour. Then it returns.

If you are Pitta-dominant, this is not random indigestion. It is a pattern. Pitta's digestive fire (Agni) is naturally strong. When it overheats — through trigger foods, stress, late meals, or alcohol — it produces excess hydrochloric acid. The acid rises. The lining burns. And because Pitta types tend to push through discomfort rather than stop, the pattern deepens before it is addressed.

What's Happening

In Ayurvedic physiology, Pachaka Pitta governs the digestive fire in the stomach. Its role is to break down food efficiently. When Pitta increases, Pachaka Pitta becomes tikshna (excessively sharp). The acid output rises beyond what is needed. The stomach lining, and the oesophageal sphincter above it, are not designed for sustained exposure to this level of acidity.

The timing is key. Pitta's daily peak runs 10pm to 2am. Food eaten after 7pm is still in the stomach during these hours, meeting peak acid production head-on. This is why night-time reflux is a hallmark Pitta symptom. It is not just what you eat — it is when.

Triggers are consistent: chillies, raw garlic, tomatoes, citrus, vinegar, alcohol (especially wine and spirits), coffee on an empty stomach, and emotional intensity. The gut-brain axis in Pitta types is direct — a high-pressure meeting can produce as much acid as a vindaloo.

The Fix

Aloe vera juice before meals. Thirty millilitres of food-grade, inner-leaf aloe vera juice, 20 minutes before lunch and dinner. Aloe is cooling, soothing, and coats the upper digestive tract. It directly counteracts the sharp, hot quality of excess Pitta acid. Use a product without added aloin (the laxative compound). Avoid during pregnancy.

Make lunch the biggest meal. Agni peaks between 12pm and 1pm. Eating your largest meal when digestive fire is strongest means food is processed efficiently, with less residual acid. Dinner should be light, warm, and finished by 7pm. A soup or simple dal-rice. Nothing heavy, nothing spicy.

No eating after 7pm. This is the single most effective timing intervention for Pitta reflux. Three hours between your last bite and bed allows the stomach to empty before Pitta hours begin. If you must eat late, choose something alkaline and light — steamed vegetables with rice, or warm milk with a pinch of cardamom.

DGL licorice between meals. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice chewable tablets, one taken 20 minutes before meals or between meals when burning occurs. DGL coats the oesophageal and stomach lining with a protective layer. Unlike regular licorice, DGL does not raise blood pressure. It is widely available and well tolerated.

Cooling post-meal practices. A short, gentle walk after meals (not vigorous exercise). Fennel seeds chewed slowly. A cup of mint or coriander tea. These small post-meal rituals cool digestion and prevent acid from building. Avoid lying down for at least two hours after eating.

When to See a Practitioner

See a gastroenterologist if acid reflux occurs more than twice a week, if you have difficulty swallowing, persistent hoarseness, unintended weight loss, or if symptoms worsen despite dietary changes. Chronic GERD can cause oesophageal changes that need monitoring. Ayurvedic cooling practices support digestive comfort — they do not replace endoscopic evaluation when symptoms are chronic or progressive.

If you are on proton pump inhibitors or other acid-suppressing medication, do not discontinue without your doctor's guidance. Ayurvedic practices can work alongside medication.

This pattern is closely related to Pitta heartburn and often accompanies Pitta loose stools. Read the complete Pitta body type guide for the full constitutional picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from regular heartburn?

Pitta acid reflux is a constitutional pattern, not a one-off event. It recurs predictably with Pitta triggers: spicy food, stress, alcohol, and late eating. The burning often extends beyond the chest to the throat and mouth. Understanding it as a Pitta pattern means addressing the root, not just the symptom.

Is aloe vera juice safe to drink?

Food-grade, inner-leaf aloe vera juice (without aloin) is generally safe for most adults. Start with 30ml before meals. Avoid during pregnancy. If you are on diabetes medication, monitor blood sugar, as aloe may lower it.

What is DGL licorice?

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice — licorice with the compound that raises blood pressure removed. It coats and soothes the oesophageal and stomach lining. Chew one tablet 20 minutes before meals. It is well tolerated and widely available.

Why does acid reflux worsen at night?

Pitta hours run 10pm to 2am. Eating late means food sits in the stomach during Pitta's peak, generating excess acid. Lying down allows acid to travel upward. The combination makes night-time the worst window for Pitta reflux.
