About this practice
Afternoon Slump is a five-minute Kapha-activating micro-session designed for the post-lunch energy dip that classical Ayurveda identifies as the Kapha period of the day (2pm-4pm in many schemas). The practice uses two rounds of Kapalabhati, dynamic shoulder rolls, and an energising intention to convert sluggishness into available energy.
The Charaka Samhita treats post-lunch slowing as Kapha-induced — the digestive activity diverts blood and prana from the brain to the gut. Most cultures address this with caffeine; Ayurveda addresses it with activation pranayama. Kapalabhati produces immediate clearing and warming; shoulder rolls release the upper-body stagnation that accumulates from sitting; the intention sets the second half of the working day.
The practice can be done at a desk in five minutes. Standing is better but not required. By the end, the practitioner has access to the alertness needed for the afternoon's work without relying on stimulants. Used consistently across weeks, the afternoon slump diminishes — the body learns the activation pattern and applies it spontaneously.

How to practice
- 1
Stand if possible; otherwise sit upright with spine erect. Eyes closed or soft gaze.
- 2
Round one of Kapalabhati: twenty rapid forceful exhalations through the nose.
- 3
Three normal breaths. Round two of Kapalabhati: twenty more.
- 4
Stop. Three normal breaths. Dynamic shoulder rolls: ten forward, ten backward.
- 5
Set energising intention: 'I am alert and ready for the second half of this day.' Return to work.
Practice tips
- Open a window briefly if possible — fresh air compounds the activation.
- Avoid this if pregnant or with Kapalabhati contraindications. Substitute brisk walking for five minutes.
- Do not eat or drink during the practice — the activation works best on settled digestion.
- Pair with cold water on the face afterwards for additional alertness.
Frequently asked questions
Is this safe for everyone?
Kapalabhati contraindications apply (pregnancy, hypertension, hernia, asthma, heart conditions). For these cases, substitute brisk walking or simple energising breath.
Can I do this in shorter form?
Two minutes with one round of Kapalabhati works as a quick reset. Five minutes provides better activation.
Is this better than coffee?
Different. Coffee provides quick stimulation that often crashes; Kapalabhati provides steady activation without crash. Both have their use, but the practice does not produce dependence.
