Day 3 introduces the body scan dimension of the Pitta Balance arc, with the specific twist of moonlight cooling. This beginner-level practice takes 15 minutes and is best practised in the morning. Benefits include introduces the body scan with moonlight cooling — a pitta-specific technique and addresses accumulated heat in pitta's classical sites (chest, eyes, jaw, skin).

About this practice

Day 3 introduces the body scan dimension of the Pitta Balance arc, with the specific twist of moonlight cooling. After two days of breath-focused practice, the body becomes the object — with each region not just noticed but actively cooled by imagined moonlight. For Pitta constitutions, who often grip the body tightly across the day, this is often a felt revelation.

The Charaka Samhita locates Pitta dosha primarily in the small intestine, blood, liver, eyes, and skin. The classical understanding is that Pitta heat accumulates particularly in these regions. The moonlight body scan addresses accumulated heat by directly imagining cooling at each region of the body.

The session opens with three rounds of Sheetali to integrate the previous days. Then the body scan begins from the crown of the head — soft silver moonlight pouring through the crown and spreading downward. Each region (forehead, eyes, throat, chest, belly, hips, legs, feet) is briefly cooled in attention. The crown-to-feet direction is deliberate: in Pitta, the head and chest often run hottest, so cooling them first makes the descent through the rest of the body easier.

The moonlight imagery draws on the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra's instruction on light meditation. Whether read symbolically or as a visualisation method, the cooling effect is consistent. Most Pitta practitioners by the end of Day 3 report a softer chest, an unclamped jaw, and a sense of being held by something cool rather than driving everything forward.

Benefits

  • Introduces the body scan with moonlight cooling — a Pitta-specific technique
  • Addresses accumulated heat in Pitta's classical sites (chest, eyes, jaw, skin)
  • Imports chandra (lunar) qualities as classical Pitta counter
  • Builds attention to the body's heat patterns
  • Continues integration with Days 1-2's breath work
  • Foundation for the elemental practices later in Week 1

How to practice

  1. 1

Sit comfortably with spine upright. Close your eyes. Three settling breaths.

  2. 2

Three rounds of Sheetali to integrate previous days.

  3. 3

Begin moonlight body scan. Imagine soft silver moonlight pouring through the crown of your head.

  4. 4

Crown — cool. Forehead — cool. Eyes — cool. Cheeks — cool. Jaw — cool. Each region briefly cooled in attention.

  5. 5

Continue downward: throat, chest, shoulders, arms, hands, belly, hips, thighs, calves, feet.

  6. 6

Sit for two minutes in the cooled body. Notice how the body feels different than at the start.

  7. 7

    Open your eyes when ready.

Practice tips

  • If certain regions resist cooling, return to them. Resistant regions often hold accumulated Pitta heat.
  • Sandalwood oil on the forehead before practice reinforces the cooling.
  • The cooling is felt slowly; do not expect immediate temperature drop. The effect compounds over weeks.
  • Practise in a cool room — environment reinforces practice.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot feel any cooling effect?

The effect is subtle for the first few sessions. Stay with the practice; by Day 7 most practitioners notice the cooling clearly. Imagery alone produces measurable peripheral temperature change with consistent practice.

Why crown-to-feet rather than feet-to-crown?

Pitta's heat accumulates predominantly upward (chest, head). Cooling from the source downward is more efficient than reversing. For Vata, feet-to-crown is better; for Pitta, crown-to-feet.

Can I do this practice with eyes open?

Yes — soft downward gaze works for the body scan. The moonlight imagery often lands more vividly with closed eyes, but either is valid.
