Prakriti is your inborn constitution: the Vata, Pitta and Kapha ratio you were born with. It stays for life. Vikriti is the current state — diet, stress, season, sleep. A free dosha quiz tells the two apart so food and routine can match you, not a generic plan.

What prakriti actually is

In Ayurveda, prakriti is the constitution you were born with — the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha that has been yours since conception. Think of it as the shape of your tendencies: how you digest, how you sleep, how you handle heat, cold, deadlines and quiet.

The word is also spelled prakruti. Same idea. It is not a personality quiz and it is not a diagnosis. It is a map of the three energies Ayurveda uses to talk about a living person.

Everyone has all three doshas. Prakriti is the ratio. Most people lead with one or two. A smaller number sit close to even — tridoshic.

What is my dosha?

Your dosha is the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha you were born with — the pattern that shows up in how you digest, sleep, run hot or cold, and meet a stressful week. Prakriti is that reading named classically. Vikriti is the weather.

You do not need a wall of traits to start. Find your dosha — free online, about three minutes, no signup — then eat and sit from the ratio, not a guess.

Prakriti vs vikriti

This is the distinction most online quizzes flatten.

  • Prakriti — inborn constitution. Stable. The ratio you keep for life.
  • Vikriti — current state. Mobile. What diet, sleep, season, stress and age are doing this month.

A person with Pitta prakriti can look Vata this week: light sleep, dry skin, a mind that will not land. The short-term practice follows the vikriti (warm, regular, grounding). The long-term diet and routine still honour the Pitta prakriti (cooling, not endless spice). Working from only one of the two readings is how people bounce between “I am Pitta” in July and “I am Vata” in November.

Research on prakriti has documented measurable differences across constitutional groups. That does not turn a quiz into a lab test. It does support why the framework is worth taking seriously as a wellness lens.

The three doshas inside prakriti

Vata — movement

Air and ether. Vata governs motion: breath, circulation, the jump of a thought. A Vata-leading prakriti often looks light, quick, creative, and sensitive to cold, dryness and irregular meals. When the pattern is settled, there is spark. When it runs high, sleep thins and the mind races. See the Vata guide and the Vata sleep pattern.

Pitta — transformation

Fire and water. Pitta governs digestion, focus and the heat of ambition. A Pitta-leading prakriti often looks sharp, warm, hungry on time, and easily overheated. When the pattern is settled, there is clarity. When it runs high, the jaw clenches and patience thins. See the Pitta guide and Pitta irritability.

Kapha — structure

Earth and water. Kapha governs form, lubrication and reserves. A Kapha-leading prakriti often looks steady, strong, and slow to start — and slow to stop once moving. When the pattern is settled, there is loyalty and stamina. When it runs high, mornings fog and the body holds. See the Kapha guide and the Kapha accumulation pattern.

Why a quiz, not a guess

Self-labelling almost always captures vikriti. You answer from this week's sleep, this season's weather, yesterday's argument. A structured dosha quiz asks the same dimensions in the same order — frame, digestion, sleep, stress, preferences — and returns a ratio plus what looks elevated now.

InnerVeda's quiz is free, about three minutes, and does not require an account to see the result. It is a starting hypothesis, not a practitioner consultation. It exists so the next meal, the next sit, and the next evening routine have somewhere honest to begin.

What to do with the reading

  1. Read the ratio, not a single word. Dual-dosha constitutions are common. See dual dosha explained.
  2. Eat for the pattern. Start with the Ayurvedic diet guide and eating for your dosha.
  3. Match practice to the day. A seven-minute dosha teaching sits beside the quiz if you want the framework in the body, not only on the page.
  4. Keep vikriti in view. If this month feels unlike your usual self, that is information — not proof the first reading was wrong.

Prakriti is the name Ayurveda gives the constitution you were born with. Vikriti is the weather. The quiz is how a stranger on this page gets from curiosity to a reading they can use tonight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your dosha is the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha you were born with — the pattern that shows up in how you digest, sleep, run hot or cold, and meet a stressful week. That inborn mix is prakriti. Everyone has all three; most people lead with one or two. It is a wellness reading, not a diagnosis.

Prakriti (also spelled prakruti) is your inborn constitution — the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha set at conception. It describes lifelong tendencies in digestion, sleep, energy and temperament. It is a wellness map, not a medical diagnosis.

Read lifelong patterns, not this week's weather: frame, appetite, sleep, what heat and cold do to you, how stress lands. A free online dosha quiz asks those dimensions in a consistent order and returns a ratio plus what looks elevated now. A practitioner consultation remains the clinical gold standard.

Prakriti is the constitution you were born with. Vikriti is what is showing up now. A Pitta-predominant person can run a Vata vikriti in a stressful autumn — scattered, dry, light sleep — and still have Pitta prakriti underneath. Daily practice follows vikriti; the long view follows prakriti.

Yes. InnerVeda's dosha quiz is free online, about three minutes, no signup to see the result. It separates prakriti from vikriti and returns a Vata/Pitta/Kapha ratio rather than a single label. It is a starting hypothesis, not a diagnosis.

Classical Ayurveda treats prakriti as stable. What changes is vikriti — your current state. That is why the same person can score hotter in summer and more scattered in winter without their inborn ratio having moved.

Your dosha is the language; prakriti is the reading. Dosha names the three energies — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Prakriti is the unique mix you were born with. Most people have one or two that lead, rather than a single label.
