Abhyanga: The Ayurvedic Self-Massage Practice
Abhyanga is daily self-massage with warm oil. Sesame for Vata, coconut for Pitta, mustard for Kapha. The 10-minute ritual that anchors a body-type-aware day.

Abhyanga is daily warm-oil self-massage. Pick oil by body type: sesame for Vata (warming), coconut for Pitta (cooling), mustard or warm sesame for Kapha (stimulating). Massage long strokes on limbs, circular on joints. 10 to 15 minutes before shower. Calms the nervous system, supports skin, grounds Vata especially.
What is abhyanga?
Abhyanga is the old word for rubbing yourself with warm oil before a shower. It sounds optional. For Vata, it isn't. The practice calms the nervous system, supports lymphatic flow, and grounds the body in a way nothing else really does in ten minutes.
The body-type oils
- Vata: Warm sesame oil. Heating, deeply nourishing, grounds Vata's variable nervous system.
- Pitta: Coconut oil in summer, sunflower year-round. Cooling, calming, takes the edge off Pitta's heat.
- Kapha: Mustard oil (stimulating), or warm sesame oil. Wakes up Kapha's slower circulation.
How to do it
- Warm 2 to 4 tablespoons of oil. Sit the bottle in warm water for 5 minutes, or warm it briefly in a small saucepan.
- Sit on a towel. Oil stains.
- Apply oil all over. Long strokes on the limbs, circular strokes on joints, abdomen, and chest.
- Sit with the oil for 10 to 15 minutes. Breathe.
- Warm shower. Gentle soap only where you need it.
The Vata-specific use
For Vata, even a two-minute oiling of the soles of the feet before bed transforms sleep. This is the most leveraged use of abhyanga inside the InnerVeda Vata sleep protocol. Try it for a week before you write it off.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I do abhyanga?
Daily is the goal. Three or four times a week produces a noticeable shift in two to three weeks. Once a week is better than never.
Which oil for my body type?
Vata: warm sesame oil. Pitta: coconut oil in summer, sunflower year-round. Kapha: mustard oil, or warm sesame for circulation. Dual types: blend or rotate seasonally.
Do I have to do it for an hour?
No. The traditional full-body abhyanga runs 30 to 45 minutes. The daily practical version is 10 to 15. Even just the soles of the feet matters for Vata.
Will my towels stain?
Sesame and mustard oils stain. Keep dedicated abhyanga towels you don't mind oiling. Shower with warm water and gentle soap. Most of the oil washes off.
Can I do this if I'm pregnant?
Generally yes, with a gentler oil (coconut or jojoba) and no abdominal massage. Consult your healthcare provider. Pregnancy needs personalised guidance.
